Christian Hate Groups Attacking Montgomery: Operation Save America/Operation Rescue

I’ve been asked to write a short series on a select group of anti-choice, right wing radicals. A coalition of these groups is planning a mass rally in Montgomery, Alabama during the second week of July, 2015. Most of these groups strongly identify as “Christian” groups, but in actual fact, they use tactics similar to those of religious extremists in other parts of the world.

This coalition is headed by the group known as “Operation Save America”. This group (formerly known as Operation Rescue) has been in existence since the 1980s. While their public facade is one of love and Christian grace, in reality, OSA and their members have been associated with violence and even murder.

According to RationalWiki.org:

“Operation Rescue is an extremist right-wing anti-abortion group with a history of advocating, encouraging, and in particular cases even employing aggressive and outright violent tactics to combat abortion. The group was once known as Operation Rescue West, it originated in California as part of the original Operation Rescue (formally Operation Rescue National, now named Operation Save America since 1999), but moved to Kansas in 2002 to focus attention on one of two prominent doctors who perform late term abortions, Dr. George Tiller.”

This group has become notorious for a number of unseemly actions. After the attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School, OSA protested at the dedication of an inter-faith memorial and issued the following statement:

“Watching the Memorial service for the twenty-six precious lives taken from us was painful to say the least, but it was far more painful to the God who made America great. Newtown cancelled Christmas so it could properly mourn. How foolish, yet typical of governmental strategy to replace God. The “Interfaith” service was an affront to Almighty God. Those claiming to be His priests barely mentioned His Name –Jesus! After all, He is the only God there is!

What happened? We violently removed the fear of Almighty God from the hearts of our children. We expelled God from school and banished Him from the schoolyard. He was replaced with metal detectors, condoms, policemen, anti-bullying policies, No-gun zones, and violence of unprecedented order. Our strategy has replaced God’s Truth. We are losing our kids because we are ignoring God’s Law.”

OSA also targets churches and schools with their radical beliefs, protesting loudly and hatefully at many such institutions. Churches are cursed because they don’t follow the OSA’s extremist ideas on abortion, LGBT rights, Muslims and other non-Christian faiths. Schools are targeted in the same way. No person or institution is safe from their radicalism. Several clinic bombings and other violent acts have been attritributed to Operation Save America.

One of the biggest concerns with Operation Save America is its alleged involvement in the murders of abortion providers Dr. Barnett Slepian and Dr. George Tiller. A Kansas TV station KMBC, reported on the arrest of Scott Roeder in connection with the murder of late-abortion-providing OB/GYN Dr. George Tilller on May 31, 2009, and mentioned an envelope found in the getaway car with the words “Op Rescue” and “Cheryl” and a phone number on it. Kansas news blogger Justin Kendall did some research and found that the number is a direct line to Cheryl Sullenger, a senior policy advisor with Operation Rescue/Operation Save America. Sullenger served two years imprisonment after bombing an abortion clinic in 1988.

In 1998 an OSA protestor, James Kopp (aka Clive Benson) shot and killed Dr. Barnett Slepian, an obstetrician in Buffalo, New York, who performed abortions.  Dr. Slepian was shot to death in his kitchen, by a bullet  fired from a high-powered rifle, that entered through the window of his Amherst, New York, home. His wife and one of his four children witnessed his murder.

Operation Save America has vowed to hold massive rallies in Montgomery, AL beginning July 11, 2015 and culminating July 18.  Christian churches, public and private schools, women’s medical facilities, and reproductive health care clinics need to be prepared with strong security measures  These people can be loud and intimidating, but more importantly, they can also be dangerous
